storm of criticism, but the board refused to reconsider. A drilling firm was hired to conduct tests at the site. The results of that testing have not yet been announced, although Chairman Hubert Gilkey has said that they were not as favorable as had been hoped.
The Town of Washington, concerned by the site’s proximity to its well, passed the first water protection ordinance in the state. An informal opinion from the Attorney General’s office confirmed the validity of the ordinance, giving the town power to deny approval of waste disposal facilities within three miles of the town limits.
Another tract, owned by Patricia Saltonstall off Rt. 622 near Ben Venue, was also tested in early December. Those results are not yet known.
