We respectfully ask for the help of your newspaper during our fundraising drive to assist Shirley and Dan Minton of Abingdon in keeping the unfunded, no-kill cat shelter open.
Five years ago, when Shirley found a tiny kitten hovering over the body of a dead litter-mate at the county landfill, the cat shelter was begun in her home for abandoned, hungry and handicapped cats and kittens. Literally hundreds have been saved from a certain death due to the Mintons’ unselfish efforts.
Depending on the time of year, the Mintons are caring for anywhere from 75 to 150 animals.
Shirley’s project, or “life’s work” as she calls it, was financed through the sale of handmade crafts at local flea markets, but was sharply curtailed due to her vision problems brought on by cataracts. Also, the entire stock of flea market merchandise was recently stolen, leaving them with nothing on hand with which to support the shelter.
This was, however, not their first loss. They had previously invested their entire savings in glassware to support the cats. This was all destroyed in the major fire that hit downtown Abingdon in late 1983. The Mintons are not the type to ask help for themselves, and despite the
