As treasurer, Mr. Fisher reported that the water authority shows a balance of $500 in its account. The town’s accounts show $1,500 in checking and $10,000 in savings.
Mr. Morehouse moved that town attorney Frank Reynolds’ bill for $450 for legal services be paid, and the council agreed. “He’s been very generous. That bill probably represents one-quarter of his time.”
Mr. Fisher also reported that there are still five outstanding salary checks (council members are paid $5 per month).
Mr. Wickens reported to the council that the town’s five-member planning commission “has ground to a complete halt.” Two meetings were scheduled recently, and at one meeting he was the only member of the commission present, at the other he was joined by one other member. Both times, Mr. Wickens noted, he had flown cross-country to attend the meetings.
(At the suggestion of council, a third meeting was scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Again, Mr. Wickens was the only member who showed up.)
“I’ve thought seriously about resigning, but I hate to leave the commission in the lurch,” he said, referring to the charge the commission received from council to address potential revisions in the zoning ordinance. Council requested the planners study parking, signs, revision of the town’s map to reflect the true plat, and the question of antennas within the town. “The last planning commission went through a lot of aggravation . . . There is some burnout.”
There are two appointments to be made to the town’s Board of Zoning Appeals, nominations for which must be forwarded to the Circuit Court, which makes the appointments. The council also discussed possible replacements for members of the Planning Commission who are unable or unwilling to serve. No formal recommendations were made.
In other business, the council:
• Discussed the options open in dealing with a number of dead-end roads around the town which serve houses back off the main streets.
