(Continued from Page 3) to the upstairs courtroom. The difficulty was graphically illustrated as three members of the Board of Supervisors carried Mr. Abell and another wheelchair-bound resident up the stairs to the hearing.
In August, a committee was appointed to recommend options. The committee came up with three alternatives, and the architect was directed to provide cost estimates and plans for each. A chairlift running up the stairway and a ramp at the back of the courthouse were rejected. The board approved a “wheelvator” which will lift wheelchairs up the side of the building and into the courtroom through one of the long windows. A bathroom accessible to the handicapped is also included in the architect’s plans.
9) A dispute between neighbors in Harris Hollow over housing for migrant workers and the conditions under which a special use permit was issued came to a head late in the summer.
Meredith and Henry Gorfein alleged that provisions of a permit issued to Alex Sharp for housing of migrant workers on his farm had been violated. The Board of Zoning Appeals was requested to investigate the charges.
After months spent reconstructing the terms of the permit (there was no written record of the board’s deliberations) a fiveyfiour evidentiary hearing produced evidence that there had indeed been violations of the permit’s conditions.
Mr. Sharp announced that he would abide by the permit’s conditions, but that he intended to apply for a new permit to allow for the increased labor needs brought on by his expanded operation.
10) The damage caused by deer to orchards and farm crops, especially near the Park boundary, continued to be a source of complaints by farmers and orchardists. Also, landowners in the county again wrestled with the problem of “slob hunters,” and the supervisors debated the wisdom of controls such as a case-gun law and a request to shorten the hunting season to conform with counties to the west.
A public hearing to solicit ideas drew many suggestions, but no consensus of opinion on remedies to the two problems. The supervisors promised to have recommendations to forward to the Game Commission before season lengths and bag limits are set in January for the 1987 hunting season.
