The death last week of J. R. Latham has left an empty seat on the Board of Supervisors.

According to Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, the board's legal advisor, the supervisors have 30 days from when the vacancy occurred to name a replacement as representative from Jackson District. Under provisions of the Virginia Code, if a majority of the remaining members cannot or do not fill the vacancy, then the judges of the county’s circuit court make the appointment, Mr. Luke said.

As to qualifications, anyone eligible to vote in Jackson District is eligible for appointment, the Commonwealth’s Attorney noted.
