To the editor:
I write this with apologies to all of those persons who spoke so eloquently at last Thursday’s public hearing addressing the High School Expansion Project. I should have said this then, but I recognize my own limitations as a public speaker.
After listening to all that was said, I was left with a feeling of deep concern. Most of the remarks that were made dealt with the needs at the high school; however, at this point I believe everyone should be aware of what the needs at the high school are. The high school needs every facility listed on the expansion plan.
My real concern is that one issue was never really addressed at Thursday’s hearing: how will we pay for this expansion? If money were not the real issue here, Thursday’s public hearing would not have been necessary, because the high school’s needs would have been met a long time ago.
Obviously, in Rappahannock County, property taxes are our only real source of revenue. This situation exists, because commercialization and development are discouraged in this county. Unfortunately, as the financial needs of the county increase, our source of revenue remains the same. I personally recognize that this places a disproportionate share of the tax burden on the large landowners; however, recognizing this fact does not eliminate the financial needs of this county.
