zoning amendments at its meeting Aug. 20. At its December meeting, the Board of Supervisors enacted the long-awaited zoning ordinance, thus ending a period of debate and revision which had strung out for more than two years. Agriculture was confirmed as a major force in the county by the new ordinance.
The county’s comprehensive plan, which contains similar language, is presently under review by the Planning Commission.
5) Trucks using the county as a shortcut between Rt. 29 in Fauquier County and Interstate 66 have been a concern ever since Rt. 17 was closed to trucks from Warrenton north to Marshall in November 1984.
The situation gained the attention of all the county’s residents when Clive Woodard and his wife Suzie were killed as a result of an accident on Chester Gap on June 2. A southbound tractor-trailer swerved to avoid hitting a slow-moving farm tractor, also southbound, and the trailer of the truck struck the northbound Woodard car. Two other elderly passengers in Mr. Woodard’s car were seriously injured.
The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution expressing its desire to remove trucks from the county’s “narrow, two-lane roads,” but the state remained unwilling to reconsider the ban on Rt. 17.
Two more people were killed in an accident involving a tractortrailer in front of the Rappahannock Farmers Co-op on July 28, bringing to four (of a total of seven) the number of traffic fatalities in the county in accidents involving trucks. Five passengers in the station wagon, which slid into a drainage ditch and came to rest on its top, pinned beneath the tractor, were injured. ■ ’ ■ That same week, Del. Raymond R. (Andy) Guest, Rappahannock’s representative in the Virginia House of Delegates, announced that he had received a letter from Highway Commissioner Ray D. Pethtel denying his request for a ban on trucks on Rt. 522, made following the accident in May on Chester Gap.
