Before Santa comes to town this holiday season, the National Society to Prevent Blindess-Virginia Affiliate hopes he will have crossed unsafe toys off the request lists that children from Virginia have sent him.
According to the Society, last year more than 5,000 children were treated in hospital emergency n ams for toy-related eye injuries. More than 80 percent of them were under age 15.
Frank J. Carlomagno, executive director of the NSPB Virginia Affiliate, said, “The gifts that Santa - and parents - leave under the tree this holiday should be carefully selected.
Before making a purchase, adults should consider the child’s maturity level.” Some manufacturers list suggested age groups for the toy on the package.
The Society recommends that before making purchases, buyers inspect the toy and remember that toys purchased for one child often find their way into the hands of younger children. Toys of this nature may be acceptable only when used with adult supervision.
