Pre-race predictions by the organizers for a possible record field were apparently washed out along with the week-long heavy rains. Having been named by Running Times magazine as one of the best 75 road races in the country, the race committee felt that this year might surpass 1984’s record entries of 369.
Committee member Sandra Brown said Friday that the organizers had received a lot of calls from Washington, D. G., area runners asking about the race. A race planned for Saturday on Haines Point was cancelled due to high water in the Potomac River, which runs along the course.
The lingering clouds and inters mittent showers Saturday morning probably deterred a few prospective entrants, however, and the field of 244 this year fell well short of 1984’s record.
Mr. Wingfield, as well as several other competitors, expressed their appreciation to the organizers and volunteers who worked during the weeks and months before the event, as well as the day of the race. “The people who do the organizing are just tremendous!” Mr. Wingfield said.
The volunteers included, as always, the members of the board of directors of the Rappahannock Recreation Authority, members of the Cub and Boy Scouts, and numerous Fodderstack Road residents who
