To the editor:
I have to disagree with Robert Eastham.
I think he could have written a much better, first rate article on educating for character than did his former colleague, whose article appeared on April 16. As it was, the article is a sexist (“We even know what caused it.. .feminism,”), ageist (“Children aren’t reasonable. . .”), fascist, “Bad students, children who won’t get with the program, have to be removed.”) backlash! Like the grown-ups who weren’t able to live like siblings with fellow humans having other racial characteristics so they dumped the whole mess of integration into the schools onto their (or other people’s) children, Doctor Terry Hammons would return us to the days of physical and psychological abuse of children by their teachers in the name of discipline because “Children are bad,” even though he admits that they are bad “for the same reason that adults are bad.”
He reminds me of the psychiatrists of the 1960s who told their patients who had been drivein crazy by their local moral sensitivities which were outraged by an immoral government and society. . .to adjust! (“Children that are told repeatedly that their nation and way of life are no good will see little reason to subscribe to the virtues it embraces.”)
I just wish that Mr. Eastham would send Dr. Hammons Joseph McCaffrey’s “A Column” from the editorial page of the Culpeper News for the same week, the part which ends: “In my many years as a reporter I have never seen so much corruption; sadly from men and women we would expect to be honest and upright.” And which speaks of a “malignant malaise that begins at the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue and works its way down through our society.”
A friend of mine in California recently sent me some religious literature she had come across, from a New Age group which says that it has been revealed to them that what they call “critical mass” was reached on Easter this year, by which they mean that a majority of the planet’s citizens have been converted to truth within, which readies the world for the reception of the dispensation of a spiritual age. This accords with what I’ve been saying about 1987, and the fact that the Mayan calender ends this year - implying a new beginning. This might be better visualized as the start of summer (as it often is):
