Madison County Coroner Dr. A. E. Powell pronounced Mr. Carter dead at the scene.
Lt. Jenkins said that, following an, investigation by the Madison County Sheriffs Department, a warrant was issued on Saturday charging Jeff Gatewood with first degree murder. He was also charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Rappahannock Sheriffs deputies Ray Jackson and Charles Jenkins arrested Gatewood about 2 a.m. Sunday. He is being held without bail n the Culpeper County Jail. A bond hearing has been set for April 28 in Madison County General District Court.
Conviction on the murder charge carries a possible sentence of 20 years to life in prison. The firearms charge carries a mandatory twoyear prison sentence.
