Jeffrey Scott Gatewood, 22, of Washington, was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with murder, according to Lt. W. R. Jenkins of the Madison County Sheriffs Department.
Lt. Jenkins said that the charge resulted from an incident which occurred Friday evening. He said that the Madison County dispatch center received a call at 7:27 p.m. Friday, which reported a shooting at a residence in Brightwood, on Rt. 29 north of Madison.
The Madison Rescue Squad responded and found James (Big Red) Carter, 39, of Brandy Station, who had been shot once in the chest. Lt. Jenkins said the shooting apparently resulted from an argument earlier Friday afternoon.
He said that the rescue squad attempted to revive Mr. Carter with CPR, but was unable to save him.
