“I have the unpleasant duty of reporting that Mr. Campbell will not accept the superintendency/’ announced Chairman Beverly Massie as the Rappahannock School Board ended a long executive session on Tuesday night.
Apparently, most of the three hours spent behind closed doors were devoted to trying to persuade Tom Campbell to accept the post which will be vacated by Robert Estabrook on Aug. 1. But Rappahannock’s assistant superintendent stuck by the choice he made last month to accept an administrative position in neighboring Orange County's school system.
“We all wish him well, and we will miss him greatly,” ' Hr*. Massie noted, adding that the board members wdre left “feeling flat” by Mr. Campbell's decision. ! *
Two weeks ago, Dr. David M. Gangel was hired as Mr. Campbell's replacement, effective Judy 1. This Tuesday, he got the opportunity for a quick promotion, as the board voted to offer him the superintendent’s job. Mrs. Massie said that the search for an assistant superintendent will be deferred Until Dr. Gangel responds. “We’ve got to find out if he’ll accept the superintendency before we do any more.”
Although personnel matters overshadowed the rest of the business at Tuesday’s regular monthly board meeting, there was what sounded like good news from the supervisors. Last month, in the face of $213,234 cut from the proposed 1967-88 school budget, the School Board asked that state revenue coming to the county in June earmarked for education be appropriated for that purpose. (In past years, the supervisors have put those late arriving receipts in the general fund instead.)
By letter, administrative assistant John McCarthy answered that the supervisors “will entertain” the School Board’s request to appropriate the money once an exact dollar figure is presented.
Mrs. Massie pinpointed the specific line items where the additional revenue will be used to redress cuts made earlier by the supervisors:
