however, that the very act of attempting to record something to enjoy later somehow diminishes the sight itself. Sometimes, it’s best to just sit back and eryoy.
So I did, although I’ll admit to sneaking a couple of black and white shots (just to see if they’d come out - my inquisitive journalist’s mind still at work).
That rainbow was, perhaps, a once-in-a-lifetime sight. By the time I got home, it was gone, leaving no evidence of its passing except in my memory (and two indistinct streaks on my film).
But, that rainbow ingrained more than itself on my memory. It reminded me that the wonders of nature don’t have to be breathtaking. They can be as simple as watching
the birds frolic on the feeders outside my window, a box turtle crawl through the ferns down by the spring, or my newest kitten discover the wonders of the world outside the cabin door.
It’s reassuring to realize that although much of the time my head is filled with county government, courts, sports and features, when I stop for a moment and look around, there are still rainbows and other wonders out there to fill my coldly logical journalist’s mind with awe.
