Hours later, after splashing and building castles, we noticed horrible brown greasy smudges like tar on our bodies, towels and swimsuits. It wouldn’t come off.
It was oil. We began to study the sand carefully and realized that the whole beach for miles was covered with little tiny oil globs. Everyone else was having fun, figuring the oil would come off eventually, I guess. So it did. Crazy Texas pride.
When we return to Rappahannock we’ll bring memories of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, an annual event. All Houstonians become cowboys or cowgirls for a week. Even the yuppies drag out their concha belts and boots, yea the very clerks at Kroger tie red bandanas around their necks. In the Astrodome the smells of barbecued meat, nachos, and fajitas blend with the excitement of watching the bull riders, and the wild fun of the calf scramble.
I’ll never forget the days spent at the fascinating and free Hermann Park Zoo, or walking through clouds of pink and purple on the Azalea Trail at Bayou Bend. There were the times we shopped at the Galleria - three layers of malls built around a huge indoor ice rink. The Children’s Museum was a magical place where children’s footsteps over a ramp cause different chords of a harp to play; where Britton and Sam dressed up as pioneers and played with real tools and objects in a recreated log cabin town. I’ll miss the Houston Ballet, the art galleries, the Museum of National Science...
After experiencing all these things, I leave with a feeling of awe. What a mysterious place this world is! It’s a place where not everyone speaks my language; A world where there are bumpy armadillos and pink spoonbills. And when you crack open an ugly rock, inside you might find purple crystals.
It will be good to see familiar and beloved faces again. .
