way of things to do, to learn about, and to see. Many days the boys and I ride in with James and spend the whole day exploring the city. When we turn onto the highway, the skyscrapers appear, 18 miles away, rising straight up like the Emerald City of Oz. James says it looks as though someone planted skyscraper seeds and they sprouted up magically out of the flat earth.
In the spring there was a magical sprouting. One morning in March, the scrubby grass was completely covered with great patches of light orange Indian Paintbrush and pink primroses. We’ve never seen anything like it: solid fields of flowers, miles of them. Here and there were patches of indigo bluebonnets, the state flower of Texas, but real bluebonnet country lies to the north and west of Houston.
