“I am the happiest man in the world. I was the happiest man when I was in China; I was the. happiest man when I was in Culpeper. Now I am in Washington, and I am still the happiest man in the world,” said Father Maurice du Castillon, C.I.C.M., bright eyes twinkling behind steelframed glasses, the familiar smile spreading across his face.
Known simply as “Father” to his parishioners and the many friends he has made during his time in Rappahannock County, he was honored Sunday with a Mass in observance of the 60th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. It was celebrated at the Precious Blood Catholic Church in Culpeper, with the congregation of St. Peter's Catholic Mission of Washington also participating.
Following the service, a reception was held for Fr. Maurice. Ten years ago, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his ordination, a scholarship was established. Each year it is awarded to a graduating high school student from Precious Blood Parish. This year the recipient was Michael Thompson.
A native of Belgium, Fr. Maurice celebrated his 84th birthday in July. Following college studies of philosophy and theology in his native country, he was ordained into the priesthood in August 1927.
Expanding his education with a year in medical school after his ordination, he next pursued language studies in Peking, China. After becoming proficient in Chinese, Father Maurice spent the next nine years
