The first day of school is a mile* stone in the life of every child. It is also just as big a milestone in the lives of parents. Last year, seeing my boy run out to get on the school bus for the first time brought tears to my eyes — both tears of joy and tears of sadness.

Parents play an important role in starting their children off with the self-confidence which they will need throughout their lives. This self-confidence is nurtured through good feelings about parents, about authority figures at school, about other children and, no less important, about themselves as worthwhile human beings.

A summer is a long time for a child, and parents play the biggest role in shaping the child’s attitude toward school as the first day draws closer. That attitude will carry over to subsequent first days as well.

It is clear to me that being a good parent requires work. It is also clear to me that a child who just naturally does everything right, requiring little guidance from parents, is very rare. I have gathered a few helpful hints for parents to keep in mind while preparing for the upcoming first few days and weeks of school.
