Republicans

salute Beard

The Culpeper Republican Committee will sponsor a special tribute to Delegate and Mrs. George P. Beard Jr. at their annual barbecue on Friday Sept. 11 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Carlton Clore, Zeuswyn Farm, in Culpeper. The barbecue will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mr. Beard will be honored for his 10 years of public service as delegate to the Virginia General Assembly from the 30th legislative district, which includes Madison, Orange and Greene counties, and most of Culpeper County. Before the most recent redistricting, Mr. Beard also represented part of Rappahannock County.

Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr., from Virginia’s Seventh District, former Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson (Mr. Slaughter’s predecessor) and Virginia Republican Chairman Donald W. Huffman are also expected to be on hand as guests of honor.

More than 600 guests attended this Culpeper Republican get-together last year in honor of Congressman Slaughter. Mr. Slaughter served as a delegate to the Virginia General Assembly from the 30th legislative district before being elected to the U.S. Congress in 1984.

A limited number of tickets to the barbecue are still available. Tickets can be purchased for $15 (per person) by August 28, from Culpeper Republican Chairman Ken Gieselman, or by calling (703) 5472625.

Misleading ‘bills’

mailed locally

Central Telephone Company of Virginia (Centel) announced that its customers in Warren, Page and Rappahannock counties should carefully study any Yellow Pages advertising bills or solicitations they may receive before paying them.

W. P. Flippo, Centel’s area manager in Front Royal, said some Centel customers recently have received solicitations for Yellow Pages advertising from a telephone directory company not associated with Centel.

“The solicitations are marked as such — not as bills — but they’re very similar to billing notices and some customers have been confused and have mistaken them for notices from Centel,” Mr. Flippo said.

In today’s deregulated marketplace, many companies produce telephone directories, according to Mr. • ' Flippo. “However, only one com‘f: pcmy,. Donnelley Directory, is autho■ nzed to.-j; sell Yellow Pages advertising space.
