Q. If the power goes out and the freezer has not been operating for several days, can the meat be saved?

A. If there is no evidence of spoilage or that the temperature of the meat has risen above 36 degrees F, the meat can be repackaged in a good freezer wrap and refrozen. The freezing should be done as quickly as possible. It would be better to take the meat to a commercial freezing plant that has adequate capacity since the average home freezer can only sharp-freeze about one-tenth of its total capacity at a time. Each time meat is thawed and refrozen, it will lose quality.
