The silent approach

With massive searches using helicopters and dogs yielding no results, the FBI agents in charge of the operation decided to change tactics Friday night.

Although the only statements released were, “The investigation is continuing,’’.they tried another approach. As darkness fell, agents dressed in camouflage battle fatigues and ballistics helmets, wearing bulletproof vests and equipped with “night vision” and light-enhancing sniper scopes, were stationed throughout the hollow.

The hope, apparently, was that. Leaf was holed up during the day and moving at night, and that he would be spotted by one of the “watchers” hidden in the darkness.

As dawn broke Saturday, however, the overnight vigil had drawn a blank. A state police helicopter again cut the air above the hollow as tactical teams and tracking dogs resumed the ground hunt. Among their objectives was to recheck the locked buildings which had been cleared by the FBI teams during their search Thursday.

About midafternoon Saturday, a team working on the west side of the hollow discovered a hunting cabin which had been broken into. The team suspected that the break-in was related to the kidnapping and requested assistance. Leaf was not
