Both times the negotiator had been able to calm him down and bev
gin the talks again. This time he toluol the agents at the command post that, he was concerned that if they lost' Leaf again he might carry out hi^ threat.
The negotiators agreed to Leafs demand. They summoned the pilot back to the scene, and he climbed aboard the helicopter and started its engine.
But Leaf would have to leave the sanctuary of the house to reach the helicopter. Just after 3 p.m.. Leaf came onto the porch, down the steps and into the yard. He had Ms. Hart in front of him, the carbine to her head. Leaf had strapped his son to his back, which shielded him from behind.
The three moved a short distance down the driveway, then crossed a board fence. They had walked only a few steps into the field wiien the trap was sprung.
The helicopter, which was sitting with its engine running and rotors spinning, suddenly revved up its engine and the prop wash from the rotor knocked Leaf and Ms. Hart off balance. Then it took off.
That left Leaf and the two hostages in the field, exposed, their escape back to the house cut off by tactical team members who had moved in behind them. i
