Agent Thiel added that, “we have our own ways to evaluate information as it comes in.” He echoed Agent August’s unequivocal assertion that the FBI had absolutely no reason to believe that Leaf or Cheryl Hart, his former wife and one of the hostages, had any connection with Rappahannock County before their car was abandoned in Old Hollow.
As far as where the three had stayed. Sheriff John Henry Woodward said that Leaf told the negotiator during the seige that they had stayed in a lean-to in the woods above the road where the car was found. The sheriff said that it was concealed in such a manner that it would have been almost impossible to spot from the air.
Apparently, as Leaf moved through the area at night, he noticed that the house he was eventually found in was vacant. Agent August said that the FBI believes that he entered the house sometime Friday or early Saturday, after it had been checked and cleared by the Bureau’s tactical teams.
