On Monday, two FBI agents in | Richmond said in separate interviews with the Rappahannock News, that no reliable information has been received which leads the investigators to believe that Charles A. Leaf II had any connection with Rappahannock County prior to his arrival with his two hostages sometime Easter weekend.
“After all our investigations to date,” said Don Thiel, the evidence indicates that “he had no contact with anyone here” other than the people who said they saw him that weekend. “He knew no one, he talked to no one, and no one assisted him” other than those incidental contacts with several residents.
Asked about reports that he had lived here before, specifically an allegation by Thomas Baldwin Jr. of Sperryville, which was broadcast on WUSA, Channel 9, on Sunday night and picked up by several newspapers, that Leaf had lived at Spyder Mountain in Old Hollow, FBI agent Kevin August called them "poppycock.”
