About 7 p.m., another team began searching a barn on property owned by Apple Hill Partnership about one-half mile off Rt. 211. In the barn’s loft they found cigarettes and food they suspected were stolen from the grocery store.
The helicopter which had been spotting for the operation landed in the field in front of the house. The agents got a key from the property’s caretaker and entered the house, which is used as a vacation retreat and was unoccupied last week.
When the first agent started up .the stairs, Leaf confronted him and threatened to kill the hostages. The team retreated, taking up positions inside the house on the first floor. A state police tactical squad rushed to the scene and surrounded the house, cutting off any chance of Leafs escape out an upstairs window.
Other troopers blocked the three roads leading out of the hollow and established a command post near the road in front of the house.
