The standoff begins

An FBI hostage negotiator from the Bureau’s Washington, D.C., office was brought into the house, and began talking with Leaf. Clothes, which Ms. Hart was washing when the team burst in, were taken to the county jail, dried and returned. Food was requested and delivered to Leaf.

The negotiations continued throughout the night, as troopers stood guard at the hollow's entrances and fire and rescue units from Sperryville and Washington waited at the checkpoints.

At dawn, the word was passed that “something” was imminent, i he state police tactical team which had secured the outside of the house was replaced by an FBI team, and the stalemate continued.

Morning turned into afternoon, and again the word was passed; this time that the rescue units should "stand by.” A state police med-evac helicopter was in the area, ready to swoop in and evacuate any injured people.

Bv midafternoon, the agents handling the negotiations had worked out an agreement with Leaf. They consented to his demand that he be allowed to leave in the helicopter, which had been grounded for fear of being shot at.

The kidnapper, however, didn’t know the entire plan.
