Last year fourth-grader Melissa Kindall was falling further and further behind in math. Her guardian Doris Jenkins and her math lab teacher Nina Norman asked for additional help for her and got it from Margaret Gottlieb, one of the members of the community who volunteered time in the schools to help with students in need of remedial help.
Mrs. Gottlieb worked with Melissa and one other girl twice a week. “The kids liked the special attention and special time together,” she said. “They felt it helped them keep up in class.”
“What I did mostly was drill,” she said. “There was a whole raft of materials.to use. The volunteers had made games and laminated them.” She explained that the volunteer tutors also had meetings to exchange ideas about what methods and materials were most helpful.
