Wakefield School seventh grader Eben Darling was one of only 25 .from among 1,800 of the best Latin and Greek students in the nation to receive trophies at the recent National Junior Classical League convention and, at twelve, was the ^youngest student so honored. He is ;the son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas ' Darling in Rixeyville.
Wakefield students were among -the 194 Virginia delegates at the convention held J uly 30-Aug. 4 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. They participated in various competitions fthe several academic categories and “Olympics” such as swimming, track, and chess. Other Wakefield students attending were Colleen Harrell, Jeremy Thorpe, Michael Viega, Diana Fry, Matthew Durbin, Stephanie Tomeden, Bobbie Ohlinger, Bridget Butler, Melissa Pagano and Nancy Chow.
“I consider the overall curriculum at Wakefield to be a key to itheir success,” said group sponsor Marilyn Welch, referring to the 37 ribbons and one trophy the group brought home to Wakefield. “Their study of mythology in literature and history, the Word of the Day, mottoes and abbreviations, and so forth all gave them a broader background to draw on in competition. The test experience they have had also contributed to their success; they know how to take tests.”
