By that standard Rappahannock’s remedial programs are on their way. One hundred forty-one elementary' students were eligible for last year’s programs in reading. Only 129 will be eligible this year. At the high school 108 students were eligible last year, and only 99 will be this year.
In math the programs are even closer to putting themselves out of business. One hundred elementary students were eligible last year: only 84 will be this year. At the high school 61 students were eligible last year, and only 50 will be this year.
One of the most successful parts of the program was the tutoring by community volunteers. Of those students who got one-on-one tutoring in math, the average improvement was 2.34 grade levels. Dr. Gangel told the board.
During this school year Mrs. Heddleston will continue to serve as volunteer coordinator. She hopes that the volunteers who served last year will continue again this year, and she is also looking for new volunteers.
