in 1871. Made popular by play at “Badminton,” the country home of the Duke of Beaufort, the game become known by that name. Badminton was taken up by Canadians in 1980 but did not become popular in the United States until 1929.
It has been played here rhainly as a backyard leisure' activity until the recent inclusion of badminton as an Olympic sport increased its popularity. It is a “lifetime” sport whose aerobic fitness and stamina levels exceed those of any other racquet sport. A safe sport in which excellence rewards speed and stamina, it is especially suited for both men and women players.
After a successful varsity field hockey season last year and a show of increased interest in the sport by the Wakefield distaff population, the school has added junior varsity field hockey to its sports line-up for the 1989-90 fall season.
Both JV and varsity field hockey teams participated in pre-season practice Aug. 21-Sept. 2 with coach Gabriel Lai. The recent acquisition of hockey sticks imported from India should help the teams as they begin what should be a very successful season.
Wakefield continues it full fall schedule of area competition in varsity field hockey, varsity soccer, varsity volleyball, JV soccer and lower school soccer.
