A House of Delegates Finance Committee subcommittee is presently studying proposals to limit the authority of local governing bodies to raise property taxes. That might be done through annual limits on assessment increases, separate tax categories for commercial and residential properties or a percentage limit on real estate tax increases.
Republican gubernatorial nominee J. Marshall Coleman, who lives in Fairfax, jumped into the fray recently by accusing Fairfax supervisors of spending money like “drunken sailors” and calling escalating property taxes “a snake that is constricting family budgets and poisoning the quality of life in Fairfax County and elsewhere.”
An angry Audrey Moore, the chairman of the county’s board of supervisors, retorted that two Republican members of the board had supported the county budget and praised her leadership. She added the board is considering proposals to ease the property tax burden.
