Equal rights
essay contest
“What the Equal Rights Amendment means to me,” announcing the eighth annual essay contest for Virginia students, grades 10-12, by the student education committee of the Virginia Equal Rights Amendment Ratification Council.
Information can be obtained from local school librarians, social science instructors, the public library, or by calling (804) 358-9302 or (703) 5914437. The contest begins on Constitution Day, Sept. 17 and ends Dec. 1.
Nature programs
for pre-schoolers
The popular Pebbles & Ponds preschool nature program series for ages three to five continues every Wednesday throughout September in the Friendship Shelter at C.M. Crockett Park in Midland. These hour long programs begin at 10:30 a.m., are $2 per child, and are cancelled in the event of rain. Preregistration is not required.
Upcoming topics include “Grasshoppers” on September 13, “Busy Bees” on September 20, and “Feed the Birds” on September 27. Programs are educational in format and stress an appreciation and respect for the natural world. They gener- i ally include trail walks, hands-on discovery, storytelling, and crafts.
