Though President Bush is pledged to no new taxes and no one is talking about raising state taxes in Virginia, taxpayers in many parts of the Commonwealth are, nevertheless, up in arms.
Their gripe is that property taxes, particularly in high-growth areas, are skyrocketing out of control.
And, to paraphrase Gertrude Stein, a tax is a tax is a tax, no matter whether it is imposed at the federal, state or local level.
There seems to be a Proposition 13 type mentality shaping up in the ! minds of some savvy politicians who ! are beginning to ride the waves of ’ incipient tax revolts.
The most dramatic example is in •Fairfax County, that land of milk and honey and high-rises and clogged roads, where citizens, most , of them affluent, are raising hell about the soaring real estate taxes they have to pay.
