Enhancing efforts to provide a well-rounded education for all students, Wakefield has added ballet to the curriculum as an elective during the physical education periods.
Karen Eriksson, director of the Northern Virginia Academy of Ballet, is teaching beginner to advanced levels of ballet for students in grades one through twelve. Movement expression will be available for prekindergarten and kindergarten students.
Miss Eriksson states her philosophy: “Dance is beneficial to the mind, body, and spirit of a person, strengthening the mind and spirit as it strengthens and tones the body’s muscles. It promotes heightened self-esteem and encourages self-discipline. It allows a student to express himself and becomes a healthy outlet for stress and negative feelings. It is a self-paced activity in which a student strives to be his best, not better than others.”
The shuttlecocks will be flying back and forth across the net in the Wakefield gymnasiun this year. When players in this new sport for Wakefield are up to competition level, probably near the end of November, they will begin playing matches.
