U.S. 211 project
may face yet
another delay

The state’s fiscal crisis may mean yet another delay for the already postponed four-laning of U.S. 211 between Washington and Sperryville.
Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, in a state-wide television address Aug. 16, told the Commonwealth that Virginia faces a $1.4 billion deficit, and he called for drastic measures to reduce spending and balance the state’s budget. Among his proposals were cuts in state aid to localities and five percent across-the-board cuts in appropriations to state agencies.
Virginia Transportation Secretary John G. Milliken announced last week that projects not yet under contract by the Virginia Department of Transportation would be delayed an average of six months to ease the state’s fiscal shortfall. The U.S. 211 project would fall into that category.
VDOT Resident Engineer Robert Moore said this week that his office has not yet received word on the status of the U.S. 211 project. The first phase of the project is currently scheduled to be advertised for bids in January, 1991, and a six-month delay would push it into the next fiscal year, effectively creating a savings for the department, Mr. Moore said.
“That would be a consideration, but I haven’t heard anything yet.” He said he expects to hear more details from Richmond “in the next couple of weeks” about how the proposed cuts will affect operations in the Warrenton
