seeks artists
The Virginia Commission for the Arts announces an application deadline of 5 p.m., Sept. 4, for artists to participate in Arts-on-the-Road, a sampler touring program of artists and ensembles for Virginia communities.
Outstanding professional artists in the literary, performing and visual arts will be selected by the Commission to travel to Virginia communities. During two-day residencies, the artists will present public workshops, concerts, performances, readings, lectures, demonstrations and exhibitions. Three to six artists will be selected, depending on state funding.
Arts-on-the-Road is designed as an impetus for community-initiated arts programs and activities, and to help communities expand their skills in the presentation of arts programs. Arts-on-the-Road serves as an introduction to the Commission, particularly the artist residency and touring assistance programs.
All residencies will take place between March and June 1991. Each selected artist will do one two-day residency at each of three sites. Any Virginia-based professional artist in any artistic discipline is eligible to apply. Those selected will represent Virginia’s full cultural and ethnic diversity.
The Commission for the Arts will provide publicity materials and artists’ fees. Communities will provide workshop and/or performance space, room, board and travel expenses.
