The first mile of Route 637 off U.S. 522 is paved, and the school bus does travel along that part of the road. However, Ms. Kuykendall lives another 2.2 miles further down the road on the gravel surfaced part.
For most of its length the road has a 12-foot wide graveled surface, but one portion is only 11 feet wide. A school bus is more than eight feet wide.
The Kuykendall children are among several scattered throughout the county who live on roads not served by school buses. In most cases the parents bring the children to the nearest bus stop or the children walk out.
