counties in Virginia’s Northern Piedmont grew dramatically in the 1980s.
For example, once-rural Loudoun County was home to 57,427 persons in 1980. This year, however, that figure skyrocketed to 85,760. Leesburg’s population this year is 16,102. Middleburg contains 540 people, according to the census.
Culpeper’s 1990 population figure is 27,580. Ten years ago the Cen»sus Bureau counted only 22,620 Culpeper residents, for a 22 percent increase.
The 1990 preliminary figure for Prince William is 215,862. Clarke’s population this year is 11,291.
Virginia’s population is now 6.1 million, up from 5.3 million in 1980 and 4.6 million in 1970.
Mr. Ritter said the United States figure won’t be available until next week, when the last four states are due to report. After checking the numbers (and The Plains might be among the disputed figures) the final report is due on President Bush’s desk by Dec. 31.
Detailed studies based on the Census Long Form, mailed to a minority of U.S. residents, will be coming out over the next decade, said Mr. Ritter.
“I just want to emphasize: this is preliminary and partial,” said Mr. Ritter.
