“I can certainly understand how younger people are moving away, and many people who are moving in are older and without children — but anyone who has been here for the past 10 years has got to question whether there are only 470 new people.”
Census figures are used not only for demographic purposes, and those other uses are what has Mr. McCarthy worried.
The figures are used by both the state and federal governments in formulas which determine aid for schools, social services and other programs. During the Census count, officials estimated that each person uncounted could cost the county $400 in aid each year, or a total of $4,000 over the 10-year life of the Census.
“On the one hand,” Mr. McCarthy said, “I’d hate to argue in faVor of more people. But on the other hand, the figure is so intimately tied up in the funding calculations for schools, roads and other programs — I’d hate to see us get shortchanged.”
