As a writer I have a few thoughts about the National Endowment for the Arts and its political critics.
First, to say it one more time, this debate Cannot be about the First Amendment, which, while it guarantees the right of free speech, says nothing about the use of public funds to finance that speech. My understanding of a right is that it is, by definition, something available to every citizen. Since NEA funds are limited, use of these funds cannot in any way be thought of as a right, even though they are financed by tax dollars.
