Elizabeth Karen Spande died at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville on Thursday, Aug.
She was bom on Feb. 11, 1911 in Two Harbors, Minnesota, the daughter of Frederick and Bertha Thias. She graduated from Two Harbors High School and attended the University of Minnesota. She married Thomas K. Spande on Aug 26,1936.
They served Lutheran parishes in Wisconsin, North Dakota and Arizona. She was very active in the parish life, directing several choirs and teaching in the church schools. She was also active in art classes in North Dakota and Arizona and in Culpeper.
She came with her husband to Culpeper in December, 1978. She was a faithful member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and, as long as she was able, was active in the AARP and the Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her brother Norman and sister Thelma. Besides her husband, she is survived by one brother, Frederick of Grand Rapids, Michigan; three sons, Thomas F. of Bethesda, Maryland and Sperryville; John D. and Robert A., both of Alexandria; and two grandchildren, Thomas B. and HeDel.

Delegate Raymond R. “Andy” Guest Jr. has received a copy of the report “A Change of Climate: Committing Virginia’s Resources to a Drug-Free Environment for Youth” prepared by the Governor’s Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Problems.
This report discusses the accomplishments of the Council during the past four years, such as the different programs implemented during that
time. Anyone interested in reviewing this report may do so in Delegate Guest’s legislative office located at 316 Warren Avenue in Front Royal.
