The 12 paintings on view at the Middle Street Gallery this month by Chris Stephens are good for painting students to look at, good for lovers of painting to see, and good for painters to enjoy. You will want to paint more after seeing this show.
If you don’t paint now, you may begin to notice things in the world you may not have noticed before - like that slanted patch of pinkish light on the red roof in the afternoon, or the line that winds through that cluster of trees you drive by each day. Your may begin to see light forms in the cloudy sky. And your eye may leave the yellow of the field you stand in and go through a color-encrusted bridge to the gray blue of the mountains beyond.
Everything that light touches may begin to come alive for you and yield up a limitless range of colorlight to your eyes and result of an inventive, sensitive mind at ease and fluent with his tools and materials.
