Allen demonstrated during the convention that his game plan will be one of unrelenting attacks on the competency of Democrats who have controlled state government for the past dozen years. At one point he said it was time to “take back Virginia” for the people, a theme possibly designed to appeal to the Ross Perot voters who want to take back America.
The spotlight will inevitably focus most of the time, as it always does, on the gubernatorial race. The quandary faced by Democratic gubernatorial nominee Mary Sue Terry, a heavy morning line favorite to win, is what to do about Bill and Hillary Clinton, her friends, who would be likely to do her harm than good should they cross the Potomac to campaign for her.
Unless things take a different turn, it is probable that Ms. Terry will invent reasons why the President of the United States should not be called in to say nice things on her behalf.
I agree with the political prognosticators that the Republicans start as underdogs of various proportions, perhaps 9-5 in the gubernatorial race, 5-1 in the run for lieutenant governor, and a slim 6-5 in the attorney general’s race.
