I would like to add my two cents worth to the expanding telephone coverage discussion:
I live and vote in Rappahannock County. I think I have a right as a citizen of this county to contact my county government without paying long distance charges. Many times I have needed (and will need in the future) to call the courthouse to obtain information about county services, taxes, events, etc. Because my telephone number begins with 635, I cannot call Rappahannock County without paying long distance toll charges.
The long distance costs that I am charged for calling within Rappahannock County are unfair. My long distance company (US Sprint) makes long distance calling bearable for me because it has flexible and reasonable rates. However, when I call Flint Hill or Washington the long distance costs are charged by Centel, not by my long distance carrier. Centel long distance charges are much higher than my long distance company rates. So not only do I have to PAY for a long distance call if I want to talk to the courthouse, but I have to PAY MORE than regular long distance costs.
In the current discussion about expanding telephone coverage, I have not heard a word about expanding coverage to us 635 (or 636) county residents. Please don’t forget about us; we’re part of the county too. We’d like to talk to our county government without being unfairly charged for a call.
