It was not the usual dull stodgy meeting, but as program chairman Kathleen Maier said, it was “in line with the energy and spirit of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection.”
Those who attended"' RLEP’s annual meeting were treated to swinging gospel music by David “Scratch” Clanagan and the Free Spirits, a Rappahannock County song by Lorraine Duisit, informational, inspirational and humorous talks by a variety of environmental and community speakers, and refreshments by the hosts at the Spring Mountain School. All those nominated for the board of directors were elected.
After the Free Spirits warmed up the audience, several speakers said that a major issue facing RLEP today is the proposed transmission line from SperTyville to Culpeper County that the Rappahannock Electrical Cooperative wants to build. For some this was deja vu, because RLEP was founded in 1970 to oppose a proposed power line to nan from Sperryville to Front Royal. The project was defeated through strong community effort. 1
