When ozone levels are high in the Park, they are likely to be higher in large cities. For example, on June 24, Richmond exceeded the federal ozone standard when ozone levels reached 129 ppb. Readings in the Park that dav were 88 ppb.

In addition to ozone pollution this summer, visibility degradation was very apparent in July and Aug., shrouding the Park’s scenic vistas in a brownish-yellowish haze. There were several stagnant air days in July and Aug. when visitors could not even see the valley floor from Skyland Lodge. Air quality monitoring specialist Rolf Gubler stated “The Park experienced poor visibility on 38 days during July and Aug. 1993 as compared to 24 days ih 1992 and 20 poor days in 1991.” Poor visibility is defined as a visual range between zero and ten miles.

Human caused sulfate pollution accounts for over 75 percent of the Park’s visibility impariment. This type of pollution is emitted primarily by industries and power plants that burn coal. As a result of these increasing emissions, annual average visibility in the Park has declined 60 percent between 1948 and 1983.
