followed involved drilling 12 monitor wells and continued sampling of the water supply well and Beaverdam. Creek. Quarles hired Environmental Technology' of North America, Inc., from Richmond to do the investigation and prepare the Site Characterization Report (SCR) as required by the DEQ.
Regional DEQ manager in Woodbridge, Ms. Cynthia Sales, said that the main purpose of the SCR is to throughly outline the problem, assess the risk, and to recommend abatement procedures. She added that the F.T. Valley site is one of 1900 cases in northern Virginia. •
The SCR states that the well closest to the storage tank site contained about 5 inches of gasoline which was removed by hand. Other wells showed small amounts of dissolved or residual petroleum products in decreasing Amounts away from the tank site.
Remedial action as recommended in the SCR is complex and expensive. It includes removal of more than 500 cubic yards of material from the area of the removed leaking tank. This entails excavating an area 40 feet by 30 feet to a depth of 12 feet. The excavated soils will be disposed of at a licensed treatment facility.
A sump recovery pump will be placed at the bottom of the hole before covering he area with gravel.? The pump would empty by pipe into a temporary storage drum.
The water supply will be protected by a combination oil/water separator, sediment filter, air stripper, and activated carbon adsorption units.
The stream bank will be treated by excavating an 80-foot long 3-foot deep trench to be filled with clean gravel, and by installation of a treatment system similar to, but simpler, to the system proposed for the water supply.
The estimated cost for the project is $227,000.
The Site Characterization Re-, port is under review by the Department of Environmental Quality, with final recommendations for action due Oct. 1.
