Robert James Waller, author of The Bridges of Madison County, the year’s best-selling book, will be the keynote speaker at the Blue Ridge Mountains Writers’ Retreat at Coolfont Resort, Berkeley Springs, W. Va. on Nov. 6 and 7.
Waller, whose novel has sold more than 2.5 million hard-cover copies this year, will tell how an unknown Iowa writer produced the publishing industry's phenomenon of 1993 with his first book. He will speak on-Saturday morning, Nov. 6, and will entertain that evening, singing and playing his own songs, which have been released on compact disc.
More than a dozen well-known authors will speak at the two-day conference, intended to attract an audience of more than 250 writers and others who love books.
Other authors who will participant include:
• Television news anchorman Jim Lehrer of the NacNeil-Lehrer Report, who has written several novels, and his wife Kate Lehrer, also a novelist.
• Two leading authors on the Civil War - Ernest B. Furgurson, author of Chancellorsville. 1863, and Richard Moe. author of The Last Full Measure, a history of the First Minnestoa Volunteer Regiment.
• Fleanora F. Tate, author of numerous children's books including Just an Overnight Guest.
Other speakers will include an editor from the New York publishing house of Simon and Schuster, Inc., and a New York literary agent, who will discuss how an aspiring writer can get his or her book published.
"The conference is intended for anyone who loves books, and especially for writers who aspire to have their own work published,” said James F. Gannon, one of the organizers of the weekend retreat. Gannon, who is Washington Bureau Chief of The Detroit News and a national columnist for the Gannett Co. newspapers, said the conference “will be a chance for writers and book-lovers to mingle with leading authors of fiction and nonfiction in a relaxed setting amid the autumn beauty of West Virginia.”
