An apple certainly meets the above criteria for a snack without doing anything to it. But if you want to be a little more creative, try one of the apple snack recipes that follow. Many are simple enough for children to help prepare.

Apple Snacks

Rappahannock ranks sixth in apple producing counties in Virgina. Six popular apple varieties make up 90 percent of all apple trees grown in Virginia. These are: Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Rome, Stayman, Winesapand York.

There are many ways to use apples-from eating fresh to using in salads, desserts, baked, and making applesauce and cider. The following recipes for children’s snacks using apples are from local cooks in Rappahannock County and the Virginia Apple Commission. Enjoy!

Apple Smiles

1 red medium apple, cored and sliced

Peanut butter

Tiny marshmallows

Spread one side of each apple slice with peanut butter. Place three or four tiny marshmallows on top of the peanut butter on one apple slice. Top with another apple slice, peanut butter side down. Squeeze gently. Eat right away. Makes S to 10.
