To the Editor:
This morning on C-SPAN a black Arkansas caller commented on Bill Clinton as president. The caller stated that Mr. Clinton took time specifically from his duties to return to Arkansas to watch a black prisoner executed. He also reported that Mr. Clinton displaced a black female from the position that he gave to Jennifer Flowers. As a result of these actions by our present president and other Democratic politicians, the caller stated that he would never vote Democratic again.
At the time of this broadcast, I was getting my thoughts together to write editorial comments on similar grounds and was pleased to be aware that other blacks know as I do that Democratic expression about love and care for everybody is very often a ploy to get our votes.
I want to state that the Democratic Party has not been an asset in recent years for strides to overcome the problems that Afro-Americans continue year after year to experience. Democrats have taken our votes for granted and have not taken the least bit of time to show any kind of concern for our plight. We are not looking for preferential treatment. We just want to be treated fairly. Even though we now have college degrees and impressive resumes, we still do not get jobs we are more than qualified to hold. Many jobs are now going to white women to fill this nonexistent “quota.” White women without college educations.
Blacks cannot afford for their own posterity to continue to vote Democratic. I do not recommend that we all become Clarence Thomas-like stamps, but we must not be so predictable that the Republican Party and others spend no time to get us to join their ranks or be concerned about what we demand as any other American citizen.
The Virginia State Government is by far the most discriminatory employer I have ever worked with. As governor, neither L. Douglas Wilder, his political appointees nor the other black elected state politicians have done anything to assure fairness in the Virginia workplace.
